The Rainforest Alliance's Sustainable Solution ... Coffee lovers everywhere can support farmers who maintain forest refuges, havens for wildlife and biodiversity, simply by buying beans with the Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM seal of approval. The seal ensures that forests, rivers, soils and wildlife are conserved and that workers and their families are respected, paid decent wages and have access to education & medical care.

Rainforest Alliance Certification guides and rewards continual improvements on the farms, links sustainable farm management with coffee quality and connects responsible producers & traders with innovative companies and better markets. J. Atkinson & Co are proud to be a registered roaster of Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM coffees.

Coffee Kids

Coffee Kids is an international non-profit organization working with coffee-farmers and their families in Mexico and Central America on sustainable community development projects. Coffee Kids was established in 1988 in the United States by Bill Fishbein of Providence, Rhode Island, who recognized that as a roaster and purveyor of coffee, he had a responsibility to do whatever he could to help small-scale coffee farmers improve the quality of their lives.

Since its establishment, Coffee Kids has been helping small-scale coffee farmers address their own communities' problems with health-care projects, education projects and micro enterprise projects that help coffee farmers establish alternative incomes so they are no longer totally dependent upon coffee as a sole source of income.

Our Master Roaster, Ian Steel, will visit groups occasionally and talk to them (for a nominal fee) about Coffee and Tea. We have 'adopted' Coffee Kids as our chosen charity and the proceeds from all of our Talks are donated to the organisation.

Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE)

The SCAE humbly offer the following definition of speciality coffee for the benefit of their members and anyone else interested in coffee quality: "Speciality Coffee is defined as a crafted coffee-based beverage, which is judged by the consumer (in a limited marketplace at a given time) to have a unique quality, a distinct taste and personality different from, and superior to, the common coffee beverages offered. The beverage is based on beans that have been grown in an accurately defined area, and which meet the highest standards for green coffee, and for its roasting, storage and brewing."

This isn't just a definition. It's a call to arms for everyone involved in the many stages of striving for coffee excellence and the perfect cup. So you can see, it's a serious business! Our membership of the SCAE shows that we share these goals and are working towards building the speciality coffee world of the future.
